I know a year has gone by without word about what has been going on, but Zuni is a quiet little village!

The society has been working, still, on establishing a museum, and renewing vitality and interest in the village; an update:

The Zuni Revitalization Committee has been organized and recognized by the Isle of Wight County Board of Supervisors as an officially appointed committee! Any decisions about the village will have to be run by The Committee before a decision will be made. Although the two houses on Peggy Lou Lane damaged by floods and the dental office on Zuni Circle will be demolished, the brick Bank of Zuni building will be saved and weather-proofed to preserve it as the last commercial building in the old village center. A sign designating it’s founding and uses will be erected in front. The county will build a sign welcoming travelers to the county at the corner of Zuni Circle and Windsor Blvd with a memorial marking flood levels since the first recorded damaging flood in 1936

The Zuni museum is still looking for a place to settle, and more inquiries are being made for locations. Land not in the flood zone is at a premium, and we would like to keep the location in the village along or near 460.

They say there is no such thing as a ‘free lunch’, but that is exactly what we got when The Zuni Ruritan Club celebrated it’s 60th anniversary Saturday, August 23. The 24 members hosted a community fun day at the clubhouse on Ruritan Drive. Music on the stage, a petting zoo and ponies, children’s games and carriage ride provided hours of enjoyable entertainment. Mitchel P. Hunter was recognized as the last surviving charter member of the Zuni Ruritan Club. The Ruritans have a long history of providing service and other donations to deserving families and organizations.

2008 saw the loss of several ‘old timers’ of Zuni, and that loss ends a whole generation of Zunites. Walter ‘Jiggs’ Butler, Ben Munford, Frank Johnson and Ruby Thompson.

Best wishes for a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
